Among artists, people find poetic visions in a variety of places. Some, like the artist Klippel, find it in a rubbish dump, others can find it in the detritus of human consumerism such as boxes, packing cases and plastic utensils.
It is refreshing to find a more traditional vision in the work of Susan Angwin and Carl Haanappel. Both craft their work with aesthetic composition and traditional design techniques. Both work with light in an outstanding range of marks, tones and calligraphy. And with both artists, expressive form can appear from positive and negative shapes produced with the cleanest of clean washes.
Subjects range from the subtle rays of the afternoon sun as in After Lunch at the Packing Shed Restaurant to the heat of noonday as in Alderside Road, Bickley Valley. Carl's luminous mark making combines into poetic form in Roly Pool, Roleystone and Roleystone Country Club where expressive images emerge from a full range of tone and colour.
For those who look for a poetic vision from their
everyday surroundings, this exhibition is a must.
