Comment by Judith McGrath

It is difficult to discuss this retrospective exhibition of works by the late David Gregson without employing superlatives. I'm sure he wouldn't want them used but if they were left out, my comment would not be honest.

In his expressive paintings, Gregson pays tribute to the beauty of nature and reflects the true wonder of life. He is able to capture beautifully, via the use of rich colours, the fragility of flowers and the quickness of fish. The kaleidoscope of hues in his rich oil painting, brighten our surroundings and cheer the heart.

In his excellent sketches, Gregson shows us how to appreciate the joy that is to be found in the creative aspects of humanity. With alacrity of line, he transmits the energetic movements of the dancer and rhythmic sounds of music via elegant, elongated figures in bright, melodious compositions.

In his variety of images, Gregson reflects his delight in capturing the people and architecture of local towns and foreign cities, as well as neatly planted landscapes and wild bush. He can express, with expertise, his response to a subject in any medium. Consider The Church, Late Afternoon New Norcia depicted in gouache, a Portion of the Louvre noted in felt pen, the London Borough of Islington rendered in ink and Rue des Pretres, St Severn, Paris put down in watercolour. Then there is a portrait of Susan in poster paint, a Broome Couple drawn in graphite, a Bearded Man sketched in conte, views of Provence in gouache and the series The Language of the Bush sketched in charcoal. All attest to the artist's ability to draw what he sees with joy and respect.

In his practice of art, Gregson celebrated with humility and honesty, the beautiful things in life that can be seen, heard, touched and enjoyed.

In this retrospective exhibition, Gregson's work demonstrates how the brush can move the hand of a truly fine artist. And the mark it makes in that hand can move the appreciative viewer.

Thank you David, for beautiful art that reflects a beautiful soul.
