Despite the return of wet and blustery weather, you'll find a warm, refreshing breath of spring in these colourful works. Jones has the ability to lift simple things and common sights to the realm of exciting paintings without losing the charm of her subject. Her confident surface treatment and strong underlying sense of design is what empowers her subjects.

The artist employs bright hues such as lolly pink, grape purple and tangerine oranges and temperes them with warm greys, creamy whites and mustard yellows to produce visually potent works. For example in Hillside layers of rich colour create the idea of light and land flowing downhill. This movement is held in check by collection of narrow vertical bands in impasto marks that suggest saplings in dappled light. The trees provide frames for each section of colour allowing the mind to relate to both the abstract as well as figurative aspects of the composition.

Fracturing the subject into individual areas of painterly interest provides the viewer with two separate paths into the composition. In her excellent series  Harbour, Jones presents both small and large rendition of two separate but related scenes. Each offers a collection of colourful rectilinear areas suggestive of buildings and docks above the water line. These shapes are complimented by elongated reflections of curved boat hulls and areas of sunlight on the water. Despite the layers of paint and blocks of colour, there is an overall sense of weightlessness to the work.

Jones design and colour expertise is best exercised in her still live works. Iris and Pears is a 'monochrome' painting with its white blooms, vase, pears and bottles. However the white runs through a range of cool pinks and warm browns as a beautiful example of manipulating hues. Then again Camellias & Pears is a well-orchestrated celebration of bright strong pinks heightened by the yellow pears.

There is nothing simple about these paintings. It is a sign of any good artist when they can control complex aspects of their medium so the finished product is easily available to the average viewer. Jones is a very good artist.
