I LOVE PERTH
New works by LEONIE DOBROWOLSKI

There is more to celebrate about this town besides its proximity to the ocean. It's personality begins to reveal itself when you wander along the riverside and look further then just pretty boats on the water under a clear blue sky. If you narrow  your focus you'll see so much more; pedestrians with prams and cyclists on paths in green parks along the banks, sunlight dancing on high rise buildings, a variety of land and water birds, and colour, so much colour.

Dobrowolski brings all this life, light and colour to her gouache paintings and presents them to those of us who are either to busy to stop and look, or to far from the CBD to have a regular fix of its beauty. Her exuberant images are a celebration of art and life, and Perth.

Don't let the gaiety of the picture distract you from the total confidence of the painting. Dobrowolski is a colourist in the true meaning of the word, she understands and knows how to employ the broad range of hues on her palette. She's an artist who can put magenta shadows under blue bushes together with hot pink or mandarin orange building in one image and we accept the truth of the scene. Her images seem to giggle with excitement yet the solid underlying composition never falls off balance.

Paintings such as Merry Matilda Bay and South Perth Cockies are melodies played of vibrant colour, rhythmic lines and dancing shapes. Less hectic but equally melodious is Peaceful Perth Across the Maylands Peninsula as it sways to a less rambunctious polychromatic beat. Do look for and enjoy the majesty of that lone red pelican winging its way across the sky. Singling out any one exhibit isn't fair as each has it's own personality, just like the people walking through the compositions, and they all own a joie de vivre that is contagious.

Do see this charming display of excellent paintings, they are guaranteed to lift your spirits no matter how hot or rainy the day.
