Denaro combines the fluidity of biomorphic forms with the rigidity of machine parts to create sculptural hybrids that ignite the imagination. He does this by emphasizing elemental aspects held in common by natural and man-made objects. As a result, heavy gauge steel and car panels are translated into natural forms, while galvanized wire is manipulated like a pencil line to draw out ideas.
Some of the floor sculptures employ sandblasted steel and rusted metal to emulate the most delicate attributes of nature. Consider Hydra where a duet of elongated ovals of lace-like steel may be interpreted as insect wings or veins of leaves. It is a perfect example of displaying simultaneously the strength and fragility found in nature. Beautitude suggests a very different aspect of nature. Here two undulating galvanized pipe 'stems' support leaves articulated by steel rods to suggest the elegance of a growing floral form. Joined at the base, these stems are partners in a sensuous dance.
On the smaller scale, Fairy Clock employs a web of thin galvanized wire stretched within gentle contours of steel rod. It is like a pencil drawing, a fanciful doodle that has jumped off the page into the third dimension with all the spontaneity of the original idea. The images found in many plinth works suggest pictorial drawings have evolved into sculptural narratives. One example is the delightful Darlington Clouds which displays a landscape nestled beneath playful clouds.
Most of Denaro's work is an interaction between nature and humanity, while some exhibits appear to be just for the joy of making sculpture. The second gallery hosts a collection of large scale works made from car panels. The red and blue discs of Signal are on hinged galvanized pipes so they can be positioned at will. And the placement of the car panels of Malevitch White on White and His Argument with Chagall provides a delightful interpretation of an intellectual debate. Hey, not everything has to be deep and meaningful.
This is an interesting, enjoyable, amazing collection of wall, plinth
and floor sculptures that will open your eyes to the excitement of the
artform and the talent of the artist. See it and marvel.
