Very interesting. Colour and texture abounds in these figurative and non-figurative interpretations of landscape, with some nudes and a still life or two. When Grochowski holds back just a bit, his painting can be quite stunning, but when he lets it all go, well it's just a little too much.

This exhibition of 36 paintings and pastel works could have been culled to show maybe 20 of the best this artist has to offer. I quite like his landscapes enhanced with textural effects, preferring examples where the texture is a result of thick impasto paint rather than added grit. And when the grit is added to the nudes, well I feel like taking a loofa to the dear ladies. But that's just a distraction, the figures are for the most part well drawn and when distorted, done with a good understanding of proportion.

Grochowski puts interesting swirls in his landscapes. He claims to have a 'kinetic energy' calling himself 'a hectic artist' and yes, that is true. Some of his works are quite hectic and the only thing that holds the viewer's interest, and eye still enough to focus, is a straight stroke of strong arbitrary colour set amid the mad scramble of marks and hues. I found these works exhilarating except when overdone, then they are just disorientating.

The artist occasionally shows glimpses of true sensitivity to his medium, other times to his subject but when this quality is seen in both spheres, as in Bay View and Towards Kalbarri, the result is most pleasing of all.

Grochowski displays a broad range of stylistic 'tricks'. He can emulate Monet, Bonnard, Olsen and Ingres but when he's being himself, as in Deserts Edge it's a much more interesting experience.
