This small group certainly makes a big splash. Each artist offers confident works that either suggest, speak or sing about aspects of art, and life.
Heighway's works suggest secrets might be hidden in the multi-coloured layers visible through transparent surface colours. All are untitled, which leads us into our own thoughts as we attempt to decipher the artist's. One large piece divides the canvas in half along the vertical with one side red the other blue. But there really isn't a definitive dividing line rather the clear red appears to run from the right into a dark central section and emerge as clear blue on the left. Beneath the transparent colours we see an open cobweb-like structure of black. This artist's smaller works of oil on board are luscious in their treatment of the surface and are equally enigmatic.
Karajcic's work speaks about surface and colour. On one canvas, flowing lines in a variety of red hues discuss the subtle differences within the colour. A smaller work on board offers green and yellow undulating stripes that speak softly of tartan and My Diary weaves yellow together in a conversational tone. All pay homage to the oil medium that can be as tactile as fibre and fabric. These works have a sense of calm decisiveness about them, very different from the suite of seven works Where are we going that shout discordantly. We are uncertain about what the works are saying however we feel confident the artist knows what it's all about.
Rakhsha's works are gentle and lyrical yet hold their own among the larger, bolder works. Her seven small square exhibits wear broad borders of flat dusty rose that frame a central square of soft red washes on white. These mini images are accentuated by cursive marks, components of poetry written in Persian script. We don't need to know how to read the words to envisage the mood, nor be able play the tune to appreciate the rhythm. The simplicity of these works gives them a certain strength.
We have here an interesting collection of colour and enthusiasm well worth a look.
