New paintings by DAN MAZZOTTI

There is a certain timelessness about Mazzotti's work, perhaps because his paintings suggest universal truths that never date. Or maybe his classical training allows the artist to capture people, activities and emotions we can relate to. No matter the reason, the fact is these works touch the ageless spirit in us all.

The first thing you notice in a room full of Mazzotti's art is the colour. Sensuous, descriptive, harmonious colour that invites the viewer into a world of love, peace and gentle humour. The figures are iconic in that they encapsulate the essence of humanity. Here we find lovers oblivious of the world around them, a father passing his skill on to his son, a woman resting beside a basket of fruit she has gathered. There is an ancient goddess and a biblical temptress too, each dancing to a different tune.

Once the viewer goes beyond the imagery or narrative of these exhibits there is still more satisfaction to be gained in recognizing the ideal composition of the artwork. Mazzotti's paintings are well supported by solid design, fine drawing and tonal rhythms that allow him to continue exploring different effects with his medium.  By all means, indulge in the charming and gentle subjects, then look beyond the surface and appreciate the underlying structure of the paintings.

I have to admit, it is hard to get beyond the surface as I enjoy exploring the artist's experiments with different aspects of the knowledge he's accumulated over more then half a century practising his art. In some exhibits he creates a stucco-like surface on the canvas that suggests a mural effect. This allows him to work different soft hues and 'scars' into the background to provide the appearance of an ageing wall. Quite the opposite to emulating the ancient are his still life studies. These seemingly simple compositions play with volume, shape, light and colour in a decidedly contemporary manner.

The art cognizant, student and appreciator, along with all those of the "... don't know much about art but ..." brigade will enjoy this exhibition. To single out two or three preferred exhibits from the whole collection is impossible. Each painting is unique while all the works exhibit the artist's signature; truth and beauty in art.

See this exhibition, enter Mazzotti's serene world and enjoy the visual feast. Let time stop, refresh your soul.
