SENSUAL BY NATURE
New work by MIIK GREEN

For inspiration, Green looks to the microscopic aspects of nature, at little things with long Latin names. He then translates them into shiny smooth wall sculptures that invite and intrigue. The most amazing aspect of his work is that nothing of the wonder of the original is lost in the transformation.

Green employs the vivid hues of automotive paint to provide a high gloss finish that allows the eye to slip easily along the surface and demands the hand investigate these alien contours. All the works are very well finished and have a sensuous quality to them, no matter what the inspiration might be; fungi, coral, seed pods or blood cells.

Exhibits consist of single multifaceted objects or clusters of components that relate as an installation. For example, three exhibits suggest a collection of fungi protruding from the gallery wall. Devexa in Disco White, Biokoensis in Silvered Blue, and Azurea in Charcoal are composed of thin irregular shapes arranged in vertical groupings. In each exhibit, the individual sectional components are slightly different but relate via contour, colour and proximity. The smooth, high gloss surfaces placed so close together create interest in their subtle play of light and shadow between the related components.

I quite like Q-cell + Her Sisters that consists of a cluster of seven red globes that look like some exotic fruit ready to explode in their ripeness. Then too there is the cushion-like Escolzia Calyx Mulberry for its colour and provocative shape.

Besides the constructions, Green offers two sets of nine minimalist paintings. Each set hosts a coloured circle (one set in orange, the other in blue) placed in the centre of a square surface. They do little more then fill up a wall as they neither attract attention nor provide visual stimulation. If they have anything to say at all it would have to be; 'concentrate on what you do well Miik, keep up the 3D work'.

For a first solo effort this is an exciting show of new and interesting work by an up and coming artist. I look forward to watching Green further develop his solid based talent.
