TIME OUT Paintings by REGINA NOAKES
4th June - 4th July, 1999 at GADFLY GALLERY

Regina Noakes' art is ... different.  And so, memorable.  Her latest exhibition at Gadfly Gallery, Nedlands, is the antithesis of so many collections viewed over recent years, many of them good, indeed quite pleasing to a fairly wide spectrum of art buyers.  Noakes' offerings, however, can in no way be included in the general run, nor could her style be confused
with that of any other contemporary artist.

Each frame seemingly captures a moment in time --- Snap! Gotcha! --- subjects, surroundings, are as crystallized as bees in amber, clear to the eye, immortalized for eternity.  Emotions, reactions to situations, are sensed and sensitively shared by the viewer (or voyeur, as one might easily feel, standing before the beautifully landscaped, physically expressive Lovers.)

This artist favours strong, vibrant colours ... blue and yellow tiles, red wall, black cat, in The Scholar, quite exciting to the eye.  In her Confidentially (two gossiping women) one instinctively knows their conversation has opened with "Don't quote me ... and strictly entre nous, of course ...".  Explanatory notes would be redundant.

The cosmopolitan background of Regina Noakes' life (Singapore, Europe, Australia) is evidenced in both her fluency of method and multi-faceted, adventurous and often humorous approach to subject and setting.  The current Gadfly
collection leaves an indelible impression on the viewer ... and, in this case, a desire for a second viewing.
